Using Formula 1 technology, the McLaren car company is based out of Great Britain. It began with race car driver Bruce McLaren, who created his own famous car in 1966 for the Monaco Grand Prix; the teenage driver created it out of an Austin 7 Ulster. While Bruce died tragically during a test run of the car in 1970, his legend for creating world-class custom race cars carried on and the McLaren Automotive company as it is now known was formed and established in 1985.
Originally, McLaren created a company called Bruce McLaren Motor Racing and in 1964, the very first McLaren race car was produced for the world. While there were literally only a handful released, it showed the world what Bruce’s vision was for a fast, attractive sports car. He debuted his very first McLaren sports car professionally in Monaco at the Grand Prix in the mid-1960s.
Bruce continued testing prototypes in the late 1960s before his death. He ended up making a car that could go well over 160 mph and could go from 0 to 100 in just a few seconds. This was the car he was working on at the time of his death. In the early 1980s, the company was taken over by Ron Dennis, according to Wikipedia. The company continued to explore making new types of sports cars and ended up creating models used by many famous racecar drivers.
The company brought in several advanced racecar designers. They worked with aerospace technology which made the company one of the most advanced around the world. They used carbon fiber to make their new cars, which made the vehicles extremely durable and strong. This was a novelty in the world of racing; drivers could now race in greater safety without compromising their speeds.
One of their most durable and famous cars was made in the early 1990s- They created the F1. The company only made about 100 of these cars, so the value of a McLaren was firmly established as being quite high. Later the company worked with Mercedes-Benz to collaborate on producing new models.
Some of the cars they made with Mercedes-Benz’s help included the SLR McLaren. By the early 2010s, the company relaunched itself. Its new name was McLaren Automotive and it made its own cars in its own way. The company based itself out of Surry and was renown for introducing the Spider to the sports car world.
